How do I choose the right 3D printing material?


There’s a variety of 3D printing materials out there so it can be tough to know which one is right for your project. Don’t worry, that’s what we’re here for! Read on to learn more about different 3D printing materials and filaments. It’ll help you determine what material is your best bet for your next project.



  • Strong plastic – think of the material Lego bricks are made out of
  • A variety of colour options
  • High impact resistance
  • Minimum wall thickness: 1mm
  • Typically used for: functional prototypes, manufacturing tools, olds, electrical parts, casings, phone cases, engine parts and covers

High temperature photopolymer


  • Great heat resistance
  • Can simulate the thermal performance of engineering plastics
  • Minimum wall thickness: 2mm
  • Typically used for: Heat resistant fixtures, taps, pipes, household appliances or other functional parts.

Rigid opaque photopolymer


  • Opaque-coloured material that can be mixed to make other colours
  • Can also mix with rubber-like materials
  • Minimum wall thickness: 2mm
  • Typically used for: When opaque is needed.


  • Capable of creating shore “A” rubber values from 27 (soft) to 95 (hard)
  • Minimum wall thickness: 2mm
  • Typically used for: Anywhere rubber-like textures need to be made or tested

Sandstone powder


  • Firm but delicate
  • Naturally white but you can have it painted
  • Strengthened with an infiltrant after printing
  • Minimum wall thickness: 2mm
  • Typically used for: Architectural models, figurines, realistic process models

Transparent photopolymer

  • For standard clear plastics simulation
  • Combine with color materials to render a range of opacities, hues and hardness
  • Minimum wall thickness: 2mm
  • Typically used for: Used when light penetration is needed. Light covers, lamp shades, or transparencies in an architectural model
