You’re almost done your next big print design project (or web, we’re not judging here) and it’s time to spice up your copywriting with some terrific typography to go with it. Often, but not always, using two fonts can help give your projects enough visual hierarchy and will help you to create visual interest. It’s pleasing to the eye and also helps your eyes distinguish information!
There are some basic tips that you should keep in mind when it comes to pairing typefaces. Here’s a quick rundown:
- Combine fonts that share the same kind of mood.
- Pairing a serif font with a sans-serif font typically works quite well (and vice versa).
- Contrast is important. Combining two similar fonts is never a good idea.
- Stick to two fonts (and three if you must, but no more).
- When in doubt: keep it simple. Use different weights of fonts that are in the same family.
