NXNEi: Here’s what you can take away from it

Last week, I had the opportunity to attend North By Northeast Interactive (NXNEi), the interactive-focused segment of the Canadian answer to Austin’s South by Southwest (SXSW) festival. There were presenters and panelists from a variety of industries and backgrounds who covered topics from the “Psychology of Narcissism and How it Affects Brands” to “Strategies for Pitching New Clients” to “The Art of Mobile Photography.” In all of the sessions I was able to see, there seemed to be a few recurring themes that could apply to anyone, no matter what business you’re in.

How to better communicate with customers

Here are some big lessons that we can all take from NXNEi 2012:

  • Leave the sales jargon behind. Nobody really enjoys listening to or reading annoying business gobbledygook. Say what you mean, be direct, and keep it real.
  • Be humble and genuine. This seems pretty basic, but can get overlooked in business. Sometimes all it takes is a nice thank you note or an email to make a lasting, positive impact on someone.
  • Push the boundaries. Don’t be afraid to get creative with your work, no matter what it is that you do. Innovation never happens when you follow all of the rules.

Really, to sum it all up:

  • People want to work with real people. Remember that, at the end of the day, you’re dealing with other people. Work with organizations and people you enjoy working with on projects you are passionate about.
