Back in December, Pantone announced its selections for the 2016 Colour of the Year – a blend of two colours: “Rose Quartz” and “Serenity”. As a well respected authority in the world of colour, Pantone selects a colour annually to represent and embody a mood or attitude it predicts will be important in the year to come. 2016 is the first year in which Pantone has selected not one, but two, colours of the year. Rose Quartz, a pretty pastel pink, represents “compassion and a sense of composure”, while the cool blue shade, Serenity, gives a feeling of tranquility. The combination of these two colours expresses a sense of order and peace. In addition to this meaning, these colours together are meant to challenge traditional gender associations, creating a gender “blur” of equality and fluidity.
Naturally, the Pantone Colour of the Year has a considerable influence on consumer culture, fashion and retail merchandise.
