QR codes are now an integral part of most large businesses’ marketing plans. However, it seems that many small businesses are still unsure about what QR codes are and how to use them effectively. QR codes are basically bar codes that your smartphone can read and interpret. Businesses generally use them to link to an offer on their website, but there are so many creative alternatives. Here are a few examples of great QR code usage:
New York turns Central Park into a board game
To market to a younger demographic, the City of New York used QR codes to re-imagine Central Park as a huge board game. When visitors to the park scanned the QR codes, they found a plethora of information at their fingertips as well as a few minigames and scavenger hunts.
Google Maps uses QR Codes to promote businesses
The tech giant Google recently promoted 100,000 different businesses around the United States with a special QR code. Each company’s window decal QR provided a wealth of information about the business as well as many other opportunities to connect with the company and the surrounding community.
Guinness gets social with its QR cup
This QR cup created by Guinness only works when it’s filled with a dark brew and is an excellent example of a QR code that encourages customer engagement. When the code is scanned, it helps encourage the customer to update their social networking statuses, provides special promotional coupons and launches other exclusive content for the consumer.
Meet the modern mixtape
If you ever get a pang of nostalgia for the old mixtapes of the past, there are ways to recapture your youth with new technology. Take Sharetapes for example, which uses a QR code on the back of a retro tape-styled card. Just creates your desired playlist on websites such as YouTube or 8tracks and once you ”record” it, your code links to your music and you have your own personalized mixtape to share!
London Sushi restaurant’s interactive QR code campaign
Before London’s first Temaki Sushi restaurant opened, they created a simple mobile game that allowed people to fish using their smartphone. QR codes were on the construction boards outside and players could win special discounts for when the restaurant opened. This campaign provided a great way for Temaki to start interacting with their customers even before they opened their doors.
Tattoo artists challenged to fill in QR code to apply
Tattoo artists looking to apply to Berrge Tattoo in Turkey must first successfully fill in the outline of this QR code. If filled in accurately, the applicant can scan it to receive the application for the position. This ensures that all applicants have a certain level of skill!
